Award Program Targets Teenage Girls

Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita is encouraging local girls to apply for the Violet Richardson Award.

They’re in search of girls who are making a difference in their community and in their world.  The Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita is launching their annual award program, the Violet Richardson Award, honoring girls who have volunteered their time to help others.

The ideal applicant is a girl, between 14-17 years old, and has been actively involved in her community.  Volunteer projects can include helping the elderly, disabled, mentally or physically challenged, or fighting drugs, crime, violence, tolerance, discrimination, or poverty.

The Violet Richardson Award program begins at the local Soroptimist club level with three awards ranging from $1,000 to $2,000.  At this level, the money is awarded to the girl who won, but the Program Chair Kris Hough says that often times is given to a charitable organization by the winner’s choice.

Club-level winners then have a chance winning one of twenty-nine $1,000 awards; also at this level, $1,000 will be donated to the volunteer organization of the winner’s choice.

One finalist will then be chosen among the 29 winners for an additional award, including a contribution of $2,500 to the finalist’s volunteer organization.

Applications for the award are available at all local high schools, or can be attained by calling Kris Hough at (661) 255-9250.

The award was named after Violet Richardson, the president of the first soroptimist club in 1921, who believed in personal responsibility and the motto, “It’s what you do that counts.”

The application must be turned into the Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita before the deadline, which is January 15th.

For further information, call Kris Hough at (661) 255-9250.
