Bag of Books Program To Foster Family Reading Time

booksellersPartnering with Newhall Elementary School and Borders Books, the Santa Clarita Valley Education Foundation is getting ready to add a new element to their Read With Me! literacy program – “Bag of Books.”

Designed to improve literacy skills and promote reading at home, Bag of Books allows children to take home a different set of books each week to read on their own and with family members.

From now until December 24, Borders Books in Valencia will be conducting a book drive to fill 100 bags with 5 books each. Customers will be given the opportunity to purchase specific titles for the bags that kindergarteners at Newhall Elementary will start using after the first of the year.

The goal of this program is for students to pick up the habit of reading outside school. Along with improved reading skills and quality family time, this program can also help non-English speaking family members improve their English.

While the program will be piloted at Newhall Elementary, the goal is to expand to other kindergarten classes in the Santa Clarita Valley in the next couple of years.
