Bands’ Best To Perform

Saturday night concert to showcase local talent.

Outstanding musicians selected by audition from music programs in junior and senior high schools across the Santa Clarita Valley will be on stage Saturday evening, March 3, for the annual Hart School District Honor Band Concert. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in Hart Auditorium with the junior high school honor band, followed by the high school honor band.

More than 700 student musicians auditioned for places on bands, with the top 83 junior high students and approximately 90 high school musicians selected for the two honor groups. Guest conductors are Gary Scudder from Stockdale Christian School in Bakersfield, and Harold Warman, director of bands at San DiegoState University.

Warman, who has been selected for many guest conducting appearances throughout California and the nation, will direct the Hart District’s high school honor band. Scudder, conductor for the junior high school honor band, was chosen as conductor for the All-Southern California honor band last year. His own school’s band was featured this year at the California Band Directors Association conference. This is the first Hart District appearance for both guest conductors.

In addition to the concert, guests will be able to participate in a gift basket prize drawing, which will help raise funds to support the annual honor band concert. An annual highlight of the concert is presentation of the Robert K. Downs Memorial Scholarship to an outstanding student musician from a local high school.

High school seniors who have participated successfully in honor band throughout their junior and senior high school years will be recognized, and other music-based scholarship awards also will be presented.

The honor band concert represents the finest participants in local junior and senior high school music programs, and allows the student musicians to demonstrate their musical expertise. Concert tickets are available through all local junior and high school instrumental music departments or are $6 at the door.

The concert will be rebroadcast on Sunday, March 11, at 5 p.m. on local KHTS Radio, AM 1220. It will also be streamed on the Web at www.hometownstation.com.
