Bathroom Pass Leads To Bigger Problems For Suspect

khts_crimeA Canyon Country man faces much more serious charges than he did when deputies first took him into custody Wednesday morning, after busting out of a hospital bathroom and going on the lam.

Shawn Tolman, 21, was arrested for possession of heroin during a routine probation sweep by deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley station, according to Sgt. Darren Harris.

Before he was taken into custody, Harris said deputies observed Tolman ingesting the controlled substance and took him to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital to make sure he was medically cleared.

When staff sent Tolman to the bathroom for a urine sample, however, he saw opportunity and bailed, running from the Emergency Department area and into the nearby neighborhood. A containment was immediately set up and deputies arrested Tolman without incident while he was walking along the paseo near Allegro Drive.

Tolman made his escape shortly after 9:15 a.m. and was captured within 10 minutes.

Harris said that Tolman was initially arrested on felony drug possession charges, but now faces charges of destroying evidence (by swallowing the drugs), possession of drug paraphernalia and felony escape.

Tolman is still at the hospital awaiting medical clearance, but once cleared, will be held at a county jail facility in lieu of $100,000 bail.
