Clinkscales joined the CHP in 1987 and worked at the Castaic inspection facility, where he held different positions before becoming a commercial vehicle inspection specialist. His wife, Debbie, also worked at the Newhall CHP, serving as a clerk in the front office.

Officer Michelle Esposito said that Clinkscales death came as a shock to officers at the local station, as well as his friends in the community.

“He did everything for everyone,” she said. “He knew how to do brickwork and woodwork and would not hesitate to help anyone with anything.”

She added that Clinkscales neighbors were very close and provided support during his illness.

“They really watch out for them,” she said.

Clinkscales was a graduate of Canyon High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was an avid bowler at Valencia Lanes in Newhall. Photos posted on a memorial website also show him performing with a rock group in his younger years, enjoying softball, traveling and camping with his family and friends.

A memorial service is scheduled at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Eternal Valley Memorial Park.
