Bike To Work Day A Rolling Success

This year’s Bike to Work Day event, held May 19 at businesses throughout the Santa Clarita Valley was a tremendous success! Bike to Work Day was created to emphasize bicycling as a practical form of transportation, to promote clean air practices, and to advocate exercise. This year’s Bike to Work event featured a friendly competition between local businesses. Three categories, including large businesses (over 100 full time employees), small businesses (less that 100 full time employees), and individual employees competed to win state and local prizes for their business. At the local level, the company in each classification with the most employees who biked to work won an ice cream social for the cyclists and will be recognized at a City Council meeting!

City Hall once again came out on top of the competition with the most employees biking in. City Manager Ken Pulskamp and Mayor Cameron Smyth each biked in from their local residences, greeted by a cheering crowd of City employees. Newhall Bicycle graciously provided the Mayor with a bike to ride. Paul Brotzman, the City’s new Planning and Economic Development Director rode his bike all the way from the Los Angeles area. All told, City Hall had 37 employees who left the cars in the garage and two-wheeled it to work.

Other local businesses took part in the friendly competition as well. Answer Products had 34 employees bike to work including the company president and directors, and College of the Canyons, last year’s second place finisher, set up an outdoor pancake station for workers who came in on bikes. Local business Remo, Princess Cruises, Precision PC, Wayforward, and the California Institute of the Arts also had several employees who biked to work. In addition to having employees ride in, Princess Cruises also held a rideshare fair, providing free BBQ lunch to all their employees who stopped by and learned about ride sharing, biking and other information. Representatives from the California Bicycle Coalition were on hand at each business to verify participation.

“We are so pleased that so many people decided to participate in Bike to Work Day this year,” said Heather Merenda, City Sustainability Planner. “With the addition of bike racks on local transit vehicles coming later this year, we are confident that biking to work is becoming an increasingly viable option for the Santa Clarita Valley.”
