Bikes On Buses Rack N’ Roll

Local transit routes connect to many bike trails.

The City of Santa Clarita is excited to provide additional travel opportunities to its avid bicycle commuters and our recreational cyclists. In keeping with the City’s Healthy City initiative, beginning July 1st, all Santa Clarita Transit local buses will activate their bicycle racks. Santa Clarita local transit routes connect to many bike trails and the paseo systems around town.

“Bikes on Buses is a very popular program throughout the country, and we are optimistic that utilization of this travel option will become prevalent in our community as well,” said Jeff O’Keefe, The City’s new transit manager Local buses have either a two or three-bicycle rack system and it is on a first come, first serve use basis. Passengers will need to remove all loose articles from their bike prior to the bus’ arrival at a stop. The minimum age for boarding a bicycle is 12 years old and able to show a student identification card.

Passengers need to inform the driver of their intent to board their bike so that the bus will be in park to allow no movement of the bus. Upon boarding, bicycle passengers will receive a “Bicycle Retrieval Card” as a reminder to take their bike when they leave the bus. This also informs the driver to put the bus in park for unloading the bike. When loading and unloading a bicycle be sure to stand near the curbside and in front of the bus and not into the traffic lane. Bus operators do not assist in loading or unloading bicycles. At the McBean Transfer Station, where it is not safe to ride your bike, please walk your bike across the pedestrian waiting area and not in the bus traffic lanes.

Please review the Rack ‘n Roll video on loading/unloading bicycle available online at, or you may try your bicycle boarding techniques between 5p.m. and8 p.m. at the July 15 Concert in the Park held at Central Park. Brochures are also available online and by calling the City at 661-295-6328.

So grab your bike and then hop on board!
