Bowman High Students Honored With ACTION Program Scholarships

Scholarships provide funds for students

Four Bowman High School seniors were honored with the First Annual ACTION Parent Teen Support Program scholarships this past June 1, 2006. Students receiving $500 scholarships were Heather Ackerley, Paul Tamborrino, Daniel (DJ) Sheck and
Jason Kurkowski-Rowlette. According to Cary Quashen, founder and president of the parent teen support program, the scholarships provide funds for students entering a community college, university or vocational education program in the Fall of 2006.

Funds for this year’s scholarship program were donated by parents and teens who attend the parent teen support program, as well as a car wash fund-raising program designed by the Valencia AutoSpa to rebate funds to the scholarship fund each time someone washes their car at the AutoSpa  through August 2006 with a special incentive coupon one can receive from the ACTION Parent Teen Support Program staff. Many often believe that teens who attend an alternative high school or a continuation type of high school are not good scholars or are not academically astute to earn a scholarship, said Quashen. “At ACTION we know different. We know there are teens who make bad decisions and as a result sometimes their school work suffers from the bad decisions they make. The students who were chosen for the ACTION scholarships were chosen because they made a conscientious effort to work on their personal problems, as well their academic standing to graduate high school.”

While this is the first year ACTION has provided scholarships for local Santa Clarita Valley students, the ACTION scholarship program began in the Simi Valley area Where Quashen also runs a parent teen support program. “We are hoping to double what we raise for the 2007 school year, giving us the ability to provide eight, $500 scholarships”, said Quashen. “In order to do that we will have a couple of fund-raising programs. We are also seeking private donations.”

Those wishing to donate funds to the Bowman High School ACT ION Parent & Teen Scholarships may do so by contacting Cary Quashen at (661) 713-3006 or Stephanie Weiss at (661) 297-0860.
