The 24-hour event will involve hundreds of cancer survivors and other local residents walking to raise awareness and funds to combat the disease. Over the course of the weekend, a record 135 teams of walkers will complete the circuit in support of the cause.

The planners expect to serve breakfast to up to 500 walkers Saturday and up to 1000 on Sunday. Among the various foodstuffs still required are juice, coffee, pastries for the Saturday morning Survivors Lap, and pancakes and sausage for Sunday morning.

Volunteers will be standing by to cook and serve the fare on its arrival, but Mindy Duffy, who is chair of food operations for this year’s Relay and will be coordinating the Sunday breakfast, says she is on the lookout for more help.

“We’d love to find a group or company that is willing to provide the food for the volunteer staff to cook and serve … if we don’t have to buy food for our walkers, all of the Relay proceeds can go to the fight against cancer,” she said.

To help with the Saturday morning Survivors Breakfast, interested vendors or non-profit groups should contact Cheryl Adams, chair of the Survivor Village subcommittee, at survivors@scvrelay.org. Those interested in the larger Sunday morning project can contact Duffy at food@scvrelay.org or 661-877-2042. Local residents seeking to participate in other ways by forming, joining, or donating to a team or volunteering should visit www.scvrelay.org.

The American Cancer Society aims to eliminate this major national health concern by supporting research, education, and awareness to manage, treat, and prevent the disease. More information is available at www.cancer.org or by calling 800-ACS-2345.
