A fifth power outage has been reported by Southern California Edison, but is much smaller is scope. Seven homes on Barbacoa Drive in Saugus lost power at 6:11 p.m. Edison estimated having the power back up by 10:15.

Although many of the power outages have been described as heat related, Nancy Williams,Regiona Manager of Public Affairs for Southern California Edison, says every malfunctioning piece is sent back to the manufacturer to determine the actual cause of a part’s failure.

Power outages have also been occuring in Palm Springs, the Inland Empire and Camarillo.

The number of homeowners inconvenienced by power outages has been greatly decreased.

According to Nancy Williams,Regiona Manager of Public Affairs for Southern California Edison says 764 customers near Via Princessa and Sierra Highway are still without power. Earlier estimates ranged from 7,691 to 3,900. Those estimates according to Edison are based on the number of customers at a transformer location not the actually homes or businesses affected.

The 41 customers with lost power near Seco Canyon Road and Garzota Drive has been reduced to 23.

Williams says the outage at Via Princessa and Sierra Highway is an underground problem. Crews are working to switch customers over to other circuits which can handle the load. Underground issues according to Williams can either be cable or transformers. They take longer to solve becasue crews must isolate the problem as they go.

Willams says crews have not reported outages affecting Henry Mayo Hospital.

A fourth power outage has been reported by Southern California Edison in the Santa Clarita area. This one located in the area of McBean Parkway and Orchard Village Road is near Henry Mayo Hospital. This outage began at 4:45 in the afternoon and crews were reportedly on the way to assess the situation. Edison reports 39 customers affected. Repair time is estimated at 8:48 p.m.

Extreme heat has caused an equipment fire according to Southern California Edison. While they say their damage assessment team is assessing damages, repairs may be delayed due to additional personnel being needed.

Lt. Tom Bryski of the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s station said outages at the intersections of Sierra Highway and Whispering Leaves and Flying Tiger Drives were still active. Deputies were dispatched earlier to the scene guide traffic when the flow of vehicles was heavy.

Originally there were three outages. The largest near Via Princessa and Sierra Highway began at 1:21 p.m. They estimate the number of customers affected at 7,691. Service personnel are said to be “testing the lines to help limit the number of customers affected.”

The second largest outage is taking place at near Seco Canyon Road and Decoro Drive. That outage began at 2:41 in the afternoon and Edison estimates 139 customers have been affected.

The longest enduring outage is near Seco Canyon Road and Garzota drive. That outage began at 5:15 Saturday evening with 41 customers suffering power loss.

Approximately 8,000 people are without electricity in the Santa Clarita region.
