A male in his mid 50’s was driving north on the 5 freeway just past the 14 interchange when the vehicle drifted into the center divider, said Sgt Zachary Emmons of California Highway Patrol.
Officials believe the victim lost consciousness due to a medical condition, and was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the condition rather than the crash itself, according to Emmons.
“We don’t think it was a fatal crash,” Emmons said. “We think it was a medical condition.”
The crash was reported at 11:39 a.m., and a SigAlert was issued for the No. 1 lane of the I-5 north at Weldon Canyon for an unknown duration at 12:10 p.m., according to CHP officials.
As of 1:12 p.m., coroner’s officials were still en route to the scene, Emmons said.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending next of kin notification.
