SCVi Charter School students were at the scene working on a science project when the fire started, said Amber Raskin, SCVi Charter School and iLead Schools founder.
“It was part of a science experience, we went to shoot rockets up into the air. The school received a permit from the fire department and there was a fire extinguisher at the scene,” Raskin said. “We took other necessary precautions. I’m proud of our team for handling it so well.”
“We arrived on scene at 11:59 a.m.,” said Inspector Chris Reade. “The fire was about five acres but is now at 100 percent containment.”
The fire was reportedly burning grass near the 32000 block of Castaic Lake Drive.
The LACoFD officials originally called in helicopters to come in and drop water on the site but cancelled the call before they arrived, he said. A total of 115 firefighters are on scene.
No structures are threatened and no injuries have been reported, he said.
