Santa Clarita Fire Update: Calgrove Fire 398 Acres, Evacuations Lifted

As of 11:50 a.m.: Fire officials are reporting there are no new flames or smoke but the wind is blowing ash from yesterday’s burn areas, giving the appearance of smoke. The fire is at 60 percent containment.

Two helicopters are on standby.

As of Thursday, June 25 at 8:45 a.m.: Los Angeles County Fire Public Information Desk officials are reporting the Calgrove Fire has grown to 398 acres with a 60 percent containment.

As of 10 p.m.: Fire officials are reporting about 350 acres burned with 45% containment on the Calgrove Fire, according to a LACoFD tweet. All evacuations have been lifted for residents.

As of 9:45 p.m.:  Calgrove Fire evacuations are tentatively scheduled to be lifted at 10 p.m., according to a LACoFD public information tweet.

The hard closure at the southbound Highway 14 /The Old Road offramp has been lifted, according to CHP.

Caltrans reports both sides of the I-5 freeway in Newhall are clear of traffic.

As of 8:15 p.m.: LACoFD public information officers are reporting that evacuations may be lifted around 10 p.m. tonight.

As of 7:40 p.m.: Emergency officials on scene of the Calgrove Fire have called off all fixed-wing aircraft. Currently, two helicopters working to extinguish the blaze, Stephanie English, LACoFD spokeswoman said.

Caltrans set up a hard closure on the southbound Highway 14 /The Old Road offramp, according to CHP officials.

Calgrove FireAs of 6:50 p.m.: Calgrove Fire per incident commander fire is now at 200 acres. 450 firefighters continue to work with air resources. According to Stephanie English Comm. Services Rep, the fire is 25% contained.

As of 5:50 p.m.: Los Angeles County Fire Department Deputy Chief John Tripp and Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Captain Roosevelt Johnson held a press conference.

We’ve had a report of one structure that was damaged during the fire fight.  Again, the fire is still spreading so we have fire engines and firefighting personnel out at the head of the fire protecting those structures and defending them against the fire as it approaches,” Tripp said.

One firefighter fell and received burns from the fall, was transported to Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital and will be transported to a burn center, Tripp said.

About 500 homes, 1,000 people and numerous animals have been evacuated, Roosevelt said.

“All animals were evacuated to Hart Park and transported to a private home on Bouquet Canyon Road and Vasquez Canyon Road,” Roosevelt said.

Los Angeles County Fire and SCV Sheriff’s have received help from numerous agencies around Southern California.

There was a structure damaged by the blaze, Tripp said but it “appears the only damage is to the eaves of a garage. We have decision points that if (the fire) hits certain places, we will evacuate.

“We’ve got five investigators at the point of origin, along the I-5 freeway. We’re going to do our best to determine what the cause was. We need to keep our situation awareness up of whats going on in neighborhoods and whats going on,” Tripp said, adding that Santa Clarita Valley residents need to stay tuned to the TV, radio, social media to stay up to date.”

Some of the streets evacuated include Wildwood Canyon Drive, Champagne Lane, Green Crest Drive, Clearbank Lane, the SCV Senior Center on Market Street, Oak Bridge Lane, Davey Avenue, Eliott Lane, Roosevelt said.

“When we got to the scene of most of these locations, people were already packing up their things when we went to knock on their doors and notify them,” he said, adding the residents have had “great cooperation” with deputies.

A total of seven helicopters dropping water and four fix wing aircraft dropping fire retardant are on scene, Tripp said.

Pierce College in Woodland Hills is also taking in livestock who have been displaced by the fire, according to the Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control Twitter.

As of 4:50 p.m.: Incident Commander reports fire still at approx 100 acres with 20% containment.

About 1,000 have been evacuated due to the ‪‎Calgrove Fire according to Commander Mike Parker with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

About 450 firefighters have responded with assistance from numerous agencies according to fire officials.

Horses have been evacuated to William S Hart Park in Newhall.

The horses being held at Hart Park need to be evacuated to Action Family Counseling and trailers are needed.

Santa Clarita Fire – Calgrove Fire Early Reports

As of 4:10 p.m.: The Calgrove Fire is at 100 acres, emergency responders are reporting a 20% containment, however has not been confirmed.

As of 3:30 p.m.: The Calgrove Fire is at 85 acres, 0% contained. There are two mobile home parks that were ordered evacuated. 2.5 miles of The Old Road, a County Roadway is closed.

Traffic back up on the NB 5 is for miles south of the 14 Freeway interchange. ICP set up at Church of the Nazarene, 23857 The Old Road.

Two fire fighters with minor injuries were taken to the hospital, according to fire officials.

Evacuating everything south of Calgrove, according to SCVTV.

As of 2:55 p.m.: Fire is officially 85 acres.

Metrolink is not being affected as of yet.

As of 2:24 p.m.: There is a 45 acre or more brush fire on the Northbound I-5 Freeway near Calgrove Blvd that is moving uphill.
The flames are visible from multiple areas in Santa Clarita Valley, including KHTS AM-1220’s building in Downtown Newhall.
Officials have said that the fire “is moving quick.”

We have a report the fire has jumped the freeway and is now on both sides.

The I-5 has two lanes open traveling north and one open traveling south.

The Old Road is closed in both directions at the 5 freeway.
