Bridgeport Residents Turn Off Welcome Beam At Lighthouse

bridgeportsignAccording to this sign, the picture itself is illegal.

Placed within the last 24 hours by the Bridgeport Homeowners Association near the corner of McBean Parkway and Newhall Ranch Road, the sign quickly got the attention of photographers whose studios are in the area and who have used the backdrop of the Bridgeport lighthouse for their images.

The lighthouse is used extensively to market the area and many families and wedding parties have posed nearby for portraits.

Now, the homeowners want no more images, no more visitors and if you should goose-step onto the manicured grass, you will be prosecuted.

Apparently the flocks of Canada Geese who stop during migration, or the coots (the feathered version) that pick at bugs and seeds on the lawns around the pond are given a bye on this one. They are welcome, as long as they don’t bring cameras.

But according to the City, everyone is welcome. Even shutterbugs.

“According to the Conditions of Approval for Bridgeport and the development agreement for the lake and the park around it, there is a right for public access,” said Santa Clarita Communications Manager Gail Ortiz, referring to documents from Bridgeport’s development. “The trails surrounding the lake and Bridgeport Park are public, but the grassy areas maintained by the homeowners’ association is not.”

The trail stretches across the bridge that goes into and through the lighthouse, but Ortiz said often large parties of people using the lighthouse as a backdrop step into the private area and cause landscaping problems, such as tearing up the sod.

“We’ve heard rumblings from some of the residents of Bridgeport that they would like it to be private and think it is, but it never was built to be completely private. The public has a right to be there.”

She said that the city will reach out to the homeowners association and Newhall Land to get the sign either removed or revised. Calls to a public number for the Bridgeport Community Association went unanswered.
