Brush Fire Forces School Evacuation

khts_fireengine5One firefighter was slightly injured and an elementary school was evacuated due to a small brush fire on the southbound I-5 just north of Lake Hughes Road in Castaic.

The fire was reported at 12:30 p.m. and prompted a full brush response, including dozers and aircraft. Knockdown was declared at 1:45 p.m.

The fire was confined to 10 acres along the hillside and shoulder of the southbound lanes of I-5. Traffic was diverted to the Ridge Route and Templin Highway was temporarily closed, but all lanes were reopened by 1:45 p.m.

Homes along Big Oak Lane were evacuated, as was North Lake Hills Elementary school; evacuation orders were lifted shortly before 2 p.m.

Fire officials said that one firefighter received a minor injury while fighting the fire.
