Budget, Recycling Facility Add To Crowded City Council Agenda

newscitymattersAs is a regular occurrence every June, the city of Santa Clarita will be taking a look at their proposed fiscal year budget.

Facing declining revenue and uncertainly of state funding, the city budget will try to accurately project how much revenue can be counted on for a full year’s worth of responsibilities, projects and capital improvements.

The city expects to make $171,936,091 for fiscal year 2009-2010, about $8 million less than last year.

As is a regular occurrence every June, the city of Santa Clarita will be taking a look at their proposed fiscal year budget.

Facing declining revenue and uncertainly of state funding, the city budget will try to accurately project how much revenue can be counted on for a full year’s worth of responsibilities, projects and capital improvements.

The city expects to make $171,936,091 for fiscal year 2009-2010, about $8 million less than last year.

newscitymattersCity Manager Ken Pulskamp will present the proposed budget Tuesday night at a public hearing during the normally scheduled City Council meeting. During the presentation, he will reveal major components of the budget, as well as most major changes and new additions.

Another large city issue is moving forward at Tuesday’s meeting; the search for a place to build a Materials Recovery Facility. The City and Burrtec are seeking an appropriate location for the facility, which will remove all recyclable material from the regular waste to help meet mandated guidelines.

Burrtec previously attempted to study a location on Sierra highway, but backed away after a large number of nearby residents complained that the facility would negatively impact traffic and quality of life in the area.

As a result, City Council member Laurene Weste requested that city staff devise a way to involve community members and governmental agencies in the search for a mutually agreeable site for a materials recovery facility.

After courting local groups and accepting applications for at-large positions, the city staff is set to propose an ad hoc committee that includes the following people:

Alan Ferdman – Canyon Country Advisory Committee
Bill Dinsenbacher – Saugus Action Committee
Duane Harte (with Carol Rock as an alternate) – Newhall Redevelopment Committee
Theone Miller – Valencia area representative
Maria Gutzeit – SCV Chamber of Commerce
David Thompson – Open seat
Edward F. Hill – Open seat;
Roger Wagner – Open seat;
Spencer Leafdale – Open seat;
Mayor Pro Tem Laurene Weste and Councilmember Marsha McLean

Joining the names on the potential list will be a “yet to be determined” individual representing the Sierra Club and another representing the Val Verde Civic Association.

The City also received applications from Charles W. Hall, Carolyn Levine, Marki Leonard, Armando Hernandez, and Bill Arens.

The City Council will have to approve the final list, and they can make adjustments if they desire.

But that won’t be all for a busy night at City Council. Members will also hold six public hearings which will look at 2 annual assessments, fee schedules and municipal code changes.
