Maybe you have heard some of the rumblings about COMMON CORE being implemented this fall, and you are wondering what this means for your child. The eight standards focus on depth of understanding and far more problem solving skills vs. learning the mechanics of the mathematics.
“One thing is certain, math courses will be more rigorous in the future and parents may need to take more responsibility to help their child succeed,” said Peggy Cannistraci, owner of Math Support Services in Santa Clarita. Testing begins in 2014 so many of the changes will take effect this fall.

These standards include ability to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, model with mathematics, use appropriate tools strategically, attend to precision, look for and make use of structure, and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
“Ultimately, focusing on the new standards will improve students’ abilities and give them more understanding of how math applies to the real world,” Peggy said. “It is also going to be more complicated to teach, especially to students who do not have competency in prior math skills. Change is always stressful. As parents you cannot help but be skeptical about how the lofty ideals will be implemented and if the goals will indeed result in better outcomes for students.”
“As an educator, I have spent my career supporting many different changes and the results that follow. More often than not, changes have positive effects, yet they also often cause unforeseen problems and confusion for students. Curriculum for math and science is Math Support’s expertise. We are always on the forefront of the changes being made and Common CORE will be no different,” Peggy said.
