Frozen Pipes Are Something To Be Prepared For, Learn How

By: Joel Moss, Owner of Paul Davis Emergency Services of Valencia

The winter holiday season is here and while most look forward to the joys of being with family and friends, many forget to protect their homes against the forces of Mother Nature.

Living in Southern California, the winter season is different from any part of the country. Residents do not need to worry about blizzards rolling through but do need to take precautions against the cold and damaging temperatures.

Frost is a major issue that many forget to take precautions against or might have no idea how it may affect them. Frost can cause damage to pipes by freezing the water inside. Once the temperatures descend enough to freeze the water inside the pipes, the water expands and can crack the pipe which in turns leads to leaks.

Think of a can of soda in a freezer that has been left too long. Over time it explodes and you have to deal with a big mess in your freezer. The same principles apply to your pipes during cold weather.

To fight against frozen pipes, be sure to:

Frozen Pipe Bursts - Paul Davis Emergency Services of Valencia

1)      Insulate your pipes

2)      Insulate your water tanks

3)      Know where the main water supply is in case of a leak you can turn off the water supply

4)      If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.

5)      When away from the house for an extended period during the winter, be careful how much you lower the heat. A lower temperature may save on the heating bill, but there could be a disaster if a cold spell strikes and pipes that normally would be safe, freeze and burst.
