Santa Clarita veterinarian Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto is offering discounts on dental checkups for dogs and cats at Cinema Veterinary Centre in honor of National Pet Dental Health Month.

In an effort to help SCV pet owners and educate the community on how important dental health is for pets, Ronchetto is offering a discount on a dental estimate extended to the end of March.

Ronchetto noted that dental cleanings are safe and thorough when performed with the animal under an anesthetic.
“It’s very important to be thorough — it’s important for safety reasons,” Ronchetto explained. “They don’t know how to just lay still.”

Being under anesthesia is safer for the animal, and the doctor. It’s also more thorough with cleaning, examinations and x-rays, according to Ronchetto.
X-rays are offered with every cleaning to be able to look at all of the roots of the teeth, and if necessary, extractions can be done, giving the doctor the opportunity to finish everything in one procedure.
Because dogs and cats have a high tolerance to pain, it can be easy for a pet owner to be unaware of their dental health.
It can become more apparent an animal has more severe problems when they either go off their food or have very loose teeth, according to Ronchetto.
“Especially with cats, they can have what are called resorptive lesions, where the enamel of their teeth are resorbing to bone,” she said. “That process is very painful.”
Through periodontal exams and x-rays under anesthesia, Santa Clarita veterinarians like Ronchetto can identify potential concerns that would be much more difficult to see if the pet were awake.
