Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto of Cinema Veterinary Centre noted that it’s normal for a new pet to act a little differently the first few days while they acclimate to their new surroundings.
“It’s very stressful having a whole change of environment, going from the shelter … to now a home, so if they’re not necessarily displaying the personalities that they did when you got them, give them some time,” Ronchetto said. “It’s a ton of changes in a really short amount of time, and that can be scary for them.”

Ronchetto recommended making sure the pet is eating and drinking well, but giving them the extra space they may need at first.
“Don’t expect too much from them in the first few days and just give them some time,” she said. “They’ll come out of their shell.”
Scheduling a general exam with a Santa Clarita veterinarian like Ronchetto is also important with newly adopted pets, according to Ronchetto, who offers free first exams for shelter pets.
“We can kind of run through your dos and dont’s for things at home, make sure that you’re providing for them appropriately, certainly checking for parasites and going through all of that is a good idea,” Ronchetto said.
For first-time pet parents, Ronchetto encouraged asking a lot of questions during the appointment.
“There’s a learning curve if you’ve never had a pet before, so when you come into your veterinarian, that’s what we’re here for,” she said. “Ask us a lot of questions, utilize us. We want to help and we want to help make your whole experience very successful.”
