“This is the time of year when people tend to clean things out and take care of things,” said Steve Sturgeon of Confidential Data Destruction. “(If you have) anything over half a dozen boxes or more, look for somebody that can take care of them that’s certified.”
Much like a CPA or even a lawyer, a national certification exists for data destruction companies, though it isn’t required by law, according to Sturgeon.

“Our employees have to pass both federal background checks as well as drug testing, and they take annual certification tests,” he said. “Not all shredding companies do that.”
Confidential Data Destruction has a fleet of mobile shredding trucks, which Sturgeon compared to “ a huge trash compactor” that safely destroys sensitive information.
“(They) basically have very large shredders actually inside the truck,” he said. “Then that material is recycled to help the environment… We’re very ‘green.’”
Most data and records need to be kept for about seven years — sometimes 10 years — and Sturgeon noted anyone with questions about whether or not they should keep their documents longer can be sent a sample policy of retention to help with their specific circumstances.
Sturgeon noted that some business owners may not know that they are actually required by law to keep employee applications for three years, regardless of whether the person was hired.
“They’re supposed to hold onto it for three years in case there’s any questions or conditions upon which that applicant may come back to question what was done relative to the hiring or non-hiring of that individual,” Sturgeon said.
Sturgeon emphasized the importance — particularly for businesses — of properly disposing of confidential information with a reputable company like Confidential Data Destruction to avoid a breach.
“If this material gets out … and it’s your company, and you’re a small company, the fines can start at $10-$25,000 per incident,” he said, adding that the Red Flag Rule is a law that went into effect in the last year and a half to help regulate how businesses handle data destruction.
“It basically says that any company that has three or more employees is supposed to have an internal policy that says, ‘What kind of information do we capture, who gets to see it when it comes in, where do we store it, how long do we keep it, and how do we get rid of it,’” Sturgeon explained. “And Confidential Data Destruction is how we get rid of it.”
