Cox recently garnered his third nomination Sunday at The Oscars for his work on “American Sniper,” and his winery in San Luis Obispo County also has earned critics’ praise.

In April, he’ll be celebrating his more nascent career with a new rosé release.

Started in 2007, Mystic Hills Vineyard, which is in San Miguel on Pleasant Valley Wine trail, grows five varietals of red bordeaux, Cox said.

The vineyard’s 2011 Unforgiven red blend just earned a Gold Medal, while the 2011 Sequel red blend and 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon both received Silver medals at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition 2015.

His wines’ names, Cox said, are often inspired by his other career in film, while the vineyard’s name comes from the view their vineyard offers, not “Mystic River” — another award-winning film Cox edited, a common assumption visitors make.

“We were on our property and we were sitting up there in a trailer and we were totally fogged in and the mist came in,” he said. “There’s a canyon and then there’s a little cut across the way and you can see three or four mountains.”

While silver screen projects keep him very busy, Cox makes time for what he calls the “family business,” which had its first harvest in 2011.

“It is a family business — my children help (me and my wife) with the vineyard,” he said.

Cox trusts experienced grower Keith Roberts, a longtime fixture in the Paso Robles vintners’ scene, with the management of their 32 acres of vines, a number Cox expects to grow with the success of their wines.

Mystic Hills Vineyard is planning a Santa Clarita celebration April 25 for the latest fruits of their labor, a rosé named H.E.A.R.T.S.

It’s the first blend of its kind for Cox, who said he’s enjoyed learning about all aspects of the process, from vine to harvest to press to, of course, tasting.

Cox started as cabernet sauvignon fan, but said his travels have led him to appreciate the French bordeaux, and other red varietals.

Away from the grapes, Cox enjoys a storied career in the film industry, where he’s worked with Eastwood on all of his films since the two began a friendship more than 30 years ago.

Eastwood liked the work Cox did during the filming of “The Outlaw Josey Wales,” Cox said, and a partnership was born.

The name for the Cox family’s latest creation, a rosé blend, comes from the couple’s six grandchildren: Heather, Emma, Alexander, Rachel, Tyler and Savannah.

“This is unchartered water for us,” he said of the rosé, the vineyard and its recent acclaim. “We’re just so overwhelmed and amazed.”

The vineyard is accepting limited reservations for the April tasting party featuring their newest creation, and if anyone is interested in a seat they should contact info@mystichillsvineyard.com, or call 805-610-1099.

“We are planning on having a lot of fun, serving our wine, food by Chef Chris New of Locally Grown, oh and wonderful music,” according to a post on their Facebook page. “We know you will love our wine. Oh, the sheep are excited, too! Can’t wait to see you there.”
