If you like the basic footprint of your kitchen or bathroom, interior designer and Surfaces USA owner Jen Brown recommends that you simply measure the length and width of the surface you’re planning to change before coming in.Santa Clarita Design Center Surfaces USA

“You can just give me a length and a width and we can get a really good, rough idea to start the whole process running,” Brown said.

If you want to keep your existing cabinets, Brown also advises you bring in a drawer or door to help your interior designer match the color. If you’re looking to replace your cabinets, simply bring in a picture of the kitchen or bathroom to give your interior designer an idea of what they’ll be working with.

“We’ll walk you through the process,” Brown said. “We’ll be able to figure out how many slabs you need, what your fabrication cost is looking at and what your timeline is.”

For larger projects, you can even schedule an in-home consultation with an interior designer to better bring your vision for your home to life.

If you’re not exactly sure what your vision is yet, Brown suggests you bring in a few “inspiration photos.”

“I always tell people to bring me in some inspiration photos,” she said. “Not that I’m going to just copy these photos, but I might be able to find something out of five photos that you’re gravitating towards so I can help you create the bathroom of your dreams or the kitchen of your dreams.”

If you’re an avid HGTV or DIY fan and are thinking about doing the remodel yourself, Brown still recommends you come in and talk to an interior designer to get a better idea of what you’re getting yourself into.

“For the people who think that they’re weekend warriors or wanna do it themselves or are just trying to figure out their budget, and they’ve been watching HGTV or DIY,” Brown said, “it’s a great idea to still bring us in the information because you’re not really getting a true sense of how to create a budget from those shows or what really is involved in the realistic side of that.”
