Celebrating local small businesses and entrepreneurs, KHTS AM-1220 is set to celebrate National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day March 29.

Rick Segel founded the holiday in honor of his own parents, who opened a small hat shop on March 29, 1929, before expanding to a women’s specialty clothing store. The family store kept increasing in store size to 10,000 square feet with over $2 million in revenue until it closed in 1997, according to holidayinsights.com.

Some of the local “mom and pop” businesses KHTS went to speak with include Honu Coffee, Olive Terrace Bar and Grill and All Star Sports Grills.

More than half of Americans work for or own a small business, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, and they make about two out of every three new jobs in the country each year.

The U.S. Small Business Administration takes the time to feature the impact of the many small business owners, entrepreneurs and more make through their shops and organizations.

With each sale, project or opportunity offered, small business owners help in encouraging innovation, creating new jobs and driving the local economy.
