Education Now Determines Destiny In The U.S.

By: Peggy Cannistraci

Changes in our economy have had a huge impact on the difference between the working class and those with a college education.  Blue-collar workers now earn less than their father did and the unemployment rate for those who drop out of high school is now more than 15%.

Peggy Cannistraci, owner of Math Support Services in Santa Clarita, elaborates on the subject. “The ability of our nation to change education policy has proven slow at best.  Currently the US has one of the lowest high school graduation rates of any developed nation.  Many schools are suffering from even less time with students, overcrowding, and a plethora of other serious problems.”

When those with a college degree are compared to those without a college degree, those with one have low employment and higher incomes.  About a third of our nation’s adults now have college degrees.  “They also reap the benefit of more stable families, which we know is critical to children’s future prospects,” Peggy stated.

In order for children in this country to be able to compete with international students for acceptance into U.S. colleges, educational policy must reposition itself.  American children will probably be relegated to economic mediocrity if educational policy is not changed to prepare them to complete college.  While families are rethinking the choices they make with their limited resources, it is clear that educational investment will become a top priority for the foreseeable future.

“How can you be proactive? Set clear goals for your child early, talk a lot about the value of education and the hard work it will take.  Provide educational support by using tutoring, private classes, and enrichment opportunities to enhance the education they are receiving at the school they attend,” Peggy stated.
