Math Support Services Compares California Standards To Asia

Peggy Cannistraci, owner of Math Support Services in Santa Clarita, participated in a trip to Asia with her daughter to learn more about their educational system and compare it to the educational system in California.

“My daughter and I were privileged to participate in a cultural and educational exchange to learn more about how Asian countries are helping students to excel in math and science,” Peggy said. “Our trip was to Japan; however there are many similarities throughout the Asian cultures. We were also able to observe how the curriculum and instruction differed from ours.”

One major difference was the fact that education is not free.

“Parents pay for all of the books, about $400 per month depending on the reputation of the school. Parents’ financial responsibilities do not end there,” Peggy said.

In addition to regular school, 80% of high school students regularly attended JUKU in Japan and Hagwons in Korea. These for profit schools provide supplementary education that students need just to keep up with the regular school curriculum. They also provide remedial education for the children who fall behind in their work and test prep services for University admissions.Math Support Services

“This ‘tutoring’ is every day after school for as much as 5 hours a day. The instruction is in small groups and is very costly for the parents,” Peggy said. “Parents pay about $500 a month for this additional instruction.  Currently only about 10% of American students participate in limited after school instruction.”

Asian parents feel that eventual success does not depend on one’s intelligence but on characteristics that can be developed. Therefore parents spend a great deal of time and energy and give their children every opportunity to succeed. This includes developing the ability to persevere.

Repeated studies show that the U.S. lagging substantially behind more than half the countries studied, while Asian cultures perform in the top 5%.  “Asia is obsessed with education and could not have transformed into the economic powerhouse that it is today without this focus.  America’s latest response is to implement CORE content standards, which demand more depth and understanding from our students particularly in mathematics,” Peggy said.

“To meet these demands teachers will have to make the time to spend on challenging problem- solving tasks. To make time for this there will be less time for review work. Our students will need more support to prepare for upcoming material and review old concepts that have not been mastered.”

Just as in the Asian countries, parents who have the means will see the value in providing supplemental instruction after school. Tutoring support will be essential for Americans just as it has been in the past for Asian families.
