This family-owned restaurant is the creation of Raul Bojorquez and his wife Dora. The restaurant is the family’s second El Trocadero Mesquite and their first venture in the United States. Other family members continue to operate the original El Trocadero Mesquite Steakhouse located in Sonora.El Trocadero

Bojorquez first arrived in the Santa Clarita Valley in 1997 at a time when the City of Santa Clarita had plans to revitalize the historic downtown district. The idea of remodeling and rebuilding the reputation of Old Town Newhall stuck with Bojorquez, enough that he quickly developed plans to open the first El Trocadero Mesquite Steakhouse on non-Mexican soil.

El Trocadero Mesquite Steakhouse is a pioneer of all sorts, being the first major business to open in conjunction with the area’s redevelopment. Its location in Old Town Newhall is very convenient, as it is right next door to Repertory East Playhouse (REP), a short distance from the Canyon Theatre, home of the Canyon Theatre Guild, and across the street from Santa Clarita’s Jan Heidt Metrolink Station.

El Trocadero Mesquite Steakhouse is light years ahead of the traditional south-of-the-border fare. Its cuisine stands apart from the competition because of the way it is prepared. The food is prepared in the style of the owners’ native Nogales, Mexico which includes noticeably lighter and tastier foods than those that would be offered at typical Mexican restaurants. This style is achieved because of the kitchen’s mesquite grill which is used to prepare a selection of steaks, poultry and fish entrees. Even the prices are “lighter” than those of restaurants of the same caliber.

There are several soups and salads that serve as excellent comfort foods and reminders of authentic Sonoran cuisine. Their specialty Caldo de Queso is a delicious broth with diced potatoes, green chili peppers and cheese and is only served on Friday. The Ensalada de Pollo features mesquite-grilled chicken breast topped with fresh mixed greens, tomatoes and onions (also available with avocados).
