Santa Clarita attorneys Cody Patterson and Rick Patterson of Owen, Patterson & Owen each recently received prestigious local recognition for their work in personal injury law.

Cody Patterson was sworn in as a trustee on the Santa Clarita Valley Bar Association’s 2018-2019 Board of Trustees, while Rick Patterson was selected as one of The Signal’s “51 Most Influential” people in Santa Clarita for 2018.

“The first thought that comes to me when I look at the selection of 51 people is, what a great cross section of the community and a significant representation of how many good people that we have that give so much of their time to make a difference,” said Rick Patterson. “I hope that inspires others.”

As father and son, Rick and Cody Patterson have brought two generations of service to Owen, Patterson & Owen.  

An associate at the firm, Cody Patterson practices personal injury law in Santa Clarita, and has served as a trustee for the Santa Clarita Valley Bar Association for the last five years.

“There are numerous board members from many law firms in the valley that help steer the board and the organization in the right direction, and so that’s why we often have a member from our firm on the board — because we like to (give) our input and to be involved,” said Cody Patterson.

A few of his responsibilities as a trustee include the oversight of funding and expenditures to ensure a viable budget; and the organization of community events, such as high school speech contests, blood drives and toy drives for children in need.

Rick Patterson noted, “I’m happy to see that the Bar Association has grown and been strengthened by a lot of young leadership… They’re kind of a quiet influence in the community as far as some of these projects, and it creates a sense of respect for the Bar and the attorneys that are members.”

While Cody Patterson began his career representing large companies in Utah, he made the transition to solely taking on plaintiff work in California in 2005, representing individuals who have been injured in both large and small cases alike.

“I like the plaintiff side because you have individual clients that you actually meet with,” he said. “We build personal relationships with them and we really believe in those cases.”

Rick Patterson, founding partner at Owen, Patterson & Owen, has represented accident victims who have suffered as a result of negligence, fraud or misconduct in nearly every state, as well as many foreign countries, for more than 40 years.

He specializes in major personal injury accidents, and also takes on wrongful death cases and a variety of mass tort litigation, such as the Las Vegas shooting, the Porter Ranch gas leak and the USC sexual abuse case.

“At this point and stage in my 41st year of practicing law in the Santa Clarita Valley, I am just focused on pursuing those people who have done wrong, and to seek accountability for their actions and compensate the victims,” Rick Patterson said. “(I’m using) the years of experience that I have to right some of those wrongs.”
