The owner of a Santa Clarita auto body shop, Cesar Ranuschio of Body Shop 661, explained how the insurance process works in terms of repairs after a car crash during a recent appearance on KHTS.

After the initial results of the crash are dealt with, Ranuschio advised individuals then contact the shop for guidance on their specific circumstances.

“A lot of times people don’t have experience reporting claims, so it’s good if they come and talk to us, and we’ll figure out how we’re going to report it,” Ranuschio said.

In some cases, the insurance company will want to send out a representative to inspect the vehicle themselves, and in other cases, they’ll request pictures and an estimate from the shop, according to Jeff Dominguez, also of Body Shop 661.

If damage to the vehicle is estimated to total over $5,000, then an insurance company representative will typically want to inspect the vehicle in person, Dominguez added.

A car is considered “totaled” by the insurance company if the repairs are estimated to cost more than 80-85 percent of the value of the car itself, Ranuschio said.

However, if a totaled vehicle is older and has a low value, but also has a low amount of mileage on it, Ranuschio advised talking to him about the repair options available.

“Sometimes you might have an old car and it’s only worth $3,500,” he said. “What (else) are you going to find for $3,500? So it’s always better if you come and talk to me, because then maybe we’ll figure out a plan or something just to keep you on the road.”
