Called Comfort Sound Technology and developed by Remo, a drumhead composite material is used to deliver a unique quality of sound that isn’t over-stimulating to someone with a disability like autism, which is often connected with extreme sensitivity to sound.Remo Inc Comfort Sound Technology

“For people with sound sensitivity, the thought of playing a drum can be a frightening proposition,” said Alyssa Janney, Remo’s health program development manager. “Comfort Sound Technology is a drumhead composite material designed to deliver a unique quality of sound by suppressing high-frequency overtones. Strong vibration, shortened decay and focused low frequencies provide a comfortable sound that is not over-stimulating.”

The free magazine will provide readers with Comfort Sound Technology product information and applications, and will offer a continuously expanding selection of resources for families, musicians, educators, therapists and caregivers of people with developmental disabilities.

Some resources include free video curriculum, lesson plans and tools for music therapists working with people with autism and post traumatic stress disorder.

While Remo’s Comfort Sound Technology can be used as a tool for learning academics, gross motor development, attention skills and much more, those with autism in particular may benefit from using drum therapy as an accessible tool to improve speech, language and social skills.

Remo Inc Comfort Sound Technology“Cognitive neuroscientists at Northwestern University have been researching the importance of rhythm, and they believe that there may be a correlation between being able to synchronize to an external beat and better early language and reading skills,” Janney said. “If this is true, then having accessible rhythm tools is particularly important for people whose language and social skills are delayed due to a developmental disability or autism.”

While about eight percent of the population uses a musical instrument for music education or performance, Janney said it is the other 92 percent of Americans who can benefit from the accessibility of Comfort Sound Technology, which was developed to create outcomes “that have less to do with music performance and more to do with health and education.”

“It’s time to stop thinking of the drum as just a musical instrument,” said Remo Belli, CEO and founder of Remo Inc. “Start thinking of it as a unifying tool, a personal wellness tool and an educational tool for every classroom.”

Santa Clarita hometown manufacturer Remo Inc. has partnered with leading neurologists and drum education experts to develop evidence-based wellness programs that use rhythm as a tool to support better living.  Music therapists often use these tools for their music therapy work. Sometimes people refer to this as drum therapy. One such program, called HealthRHYTHMS, utilizes drumming as a tool for communication and personal expression by guiding participants through a 10-step process. Other Remo wellness programs consider the needs of people with autism who drum, and people with Alzheimer’s and PTSD who also use the drum to improve the quality of their lives. Remo, Inc. is one of the leading drum manufacturers, making drums with recycled material.
