A new nonprofit in the Santa Clarita Valley has emerged, hoping to bring together businesses, nonprofits and community members through everyday transactions, an official said Monday.

“The whole purpose of the Contribute Coalition is to improve the effectiveness of community resources,” said Alyssa Janney, founder and president of Contribute Coalition. “Nonprofits are struggling to get resources because they have to make sure their overhead is not too high.”
Janney’s Contribute Coalition is designed to help nonprofits with fundraising. Local businesses give five percent or more of the purchase of a particular product or service to a nonprofit of the customers choice, she said.

The Contribute Coalition begins with local businesses signing on to be a part of the program. Local businesses help by advertising the nonprofits and allowing consumers to donate a percentage of their purchase to a nonprofit they choose, Janney said. Consumers help by shopping at the local businesses who support the program.
Janney is working with the Small Business Development Center at College of the Canyons to make sure the process is working, she said. She is making final amendments to contracts and working to connect with more businesses and nonprofits.
“This gives the nonprofits an opportunity to really champion the business that supports the community,” Janney said. “In turn, the community supports the businesses and the business supports the nonprofit.”

Past Man of the Year recipients Steve Sturgeon, Ed Boldon and Greg Nutter among various other Santa Clarita residents have shown support for the Contribute Coalition, she said.
“I care about our community and the Contribute Coalition provides an easy way for me to keep my contributions to our local non-profits aligned with my sales revenue,” said Dave Reeves, of Reeves Complete Auto Center. “This will just become part of my marketing plan and I choose to contribute at the percentage that provides an optimal tax deduction for my business. I get to show my respect for my customers by empowering them to choose where those contributions go.”
She is providing the framework for the nonprofits and that no money that comes in or out of the Contribute Coalition, Janney said. She is not being paid, just providing the marketing to the businesses and nonprofits.
There are no administration costs, so 100 percent of the money raised goes toward helping nonprofits, Janney said.
Janney works with several organizations, including the Santa Clarita Valley Education Foundation, International Foundation for the Healing Arts and Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club.
Janney describes the Contribute Coalition as a win-win-win scenario in which individuals, nonprofits and businesses all benefit.
“I was looking to find a way to make my time volunteering count for more,” Janney said. “This is my way of helping all the nonprofits and business in the community and I’m looking forward to it.”
