Richard and Chris Budman, who served as publishers from 2004-2007, purchased the Signal from the current owner Chuck Champion and his partners.

“I’m very happy to be back at the Signal,” said Richard Budman. “I want to bring quality information and relevance to the paper.”

Budman noted his 20 years in Santa Clarita will bring back the local view to the paper, two years after being sold.

Formerly under ownership from Morris Media for 37 years, Paladin Multi-Media Group took control of the paper in January of 2016.

Paladin was founded by the former Signal publishers, Russ Briley, as well as Champion and Gary Sproule.

The Budmans bought the parent company in an equity purchase at an undisclosed price.

“It is great to have someone from Santa Clarita back in control of the Signal,” said Michele Buttleman, former features and entertainment editor. “If anyone can turn them around, it’s Richard.”

Budman previously founded the Westside Reader, Santa Clarita Living and the Santa Clarita This Week newspaper.

The Signal newspaper was founded 99 years ago by the Newhall family, in 1919, as the “Newhall Signal.”
