The city holds $3.8 million in contracts with Stay Green, according to Kevin Tonoian, administrative services and technology services manager, and the renewal/approvals, if granted as expected, would raise the total to $4,147,696.
The contracts provide for the company to take care of a pair of landscape maintenance districts in the Golden Valley area, as well as for city-wide tree maintenance.
“All of the contracts that we award are competitively bid,” Tonoian said, noting the process the city of Santa Clarita creates a slight advantage to local vendors, such as Stay Green, in an effort to support local small businesses.
If a Santa Clarita business, such as Stay Green, is within 10 percent of the lowest bidder, then the local company has the option of matching, Tonoian said.
Another advantage working for Stay Green is that an incumbent company or bidder tends to have better understanding of the actual costs involved in the projections offered, he said.
The citywide tree-maintenance contract, which Stay Green is the current holder of, comes out to approximately $1.32 million, according to officials.
The company started as a small mom-and-pop in the 1970s, according to the company’s website, and is now headquartered in Valencia.
