While giving pets dental chews and similar products designed to help maintain their oral health can be helpful, annual anesthetic dental cleanings performed by a veterinarian are usually necessary to prevent harmful dental disease.

“Just like with people, if their mouths are not healthy and they have a lot of bacteria in that calculus, that bacteria can shed to other organs and cause problems other places, like the heart, liver and kidneys,” said Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto of Cinema Veterinary Centre.

Anesthetic dental cleanings allow the veterinarian to do a full cleaning and scaling underneath the gumline and take dental x-rays without causing stress and discomfort to the pet during the process.

“Because they’re sleeping, we can get underneath the gumline better,” Ronchetto added. “It’s not uncomfortable for them because they’re out, and so they’re not feeling what we’re doing.”

Pets usually don’t show signs of having any problems in their mouths until the issue has progressed to the advanced stages, making regular dental checkups and cleanings crucial to catch problems early.

“It’s amazing what they’ll tolerate… They’re sort of ingrained to hide things as best they can,” Ronchetto said. “It’s not until very advanced dental disease or a really badly infected tooth that’s causing that much pain that they’ll prefer soft foods or drop food from their mouth.”

In honor of National Pet Dental Health Month, Ronchetto and the staff at Cinema Veterinary Centre are offering 10 percent off of anesthetic dental cleanings and x-rays.

“It’s good to at least come in, make the appointment so you can get your estimate,” she said. “We can discuss and actually show you what we mean by dental disease, what we actually look at so you have a better understanding.”
