At least 18 Santa Clarita Starbucks stores are among the 8,000 closed Tuesday for anti-bias training in the wake of a Philadelphia incident in April where a manager called police on two African-American men who were quietly waiting in the store for a friend. The men were arrested.

After video of the arrest made national headlines, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said the footage was “very hard to watch and the actions in it are not representative of our Starbucks mission and values.  Creating an environment that is both safe and welcoming for everyone is paramount for every store.”

Johnson announced more 175,000 employees working at the chain’s corporate stores would receive the training.

Starbucks officials said the training will “focus on understanding prejudice and the history of public accommodations in the United States,” as well as “all aspects of bias and experience.”

According to the Starbucks Store Locator, 18 of the Santa Clarita Valley’s 26 Starbucks locations will be closed. Most are expected to close around 2:30 p.m., and will not reopen until Wednesday.

  1. They need to do an affordability lesson on lowering the price of their drinks too. I guess many people are still willing to spend a fortune on coffee drinks. Don’t complain about gas prices at 3.50 a gallon when coffee at Starbucks is about $16 per gallon of coffee!

  2. Starbucks is going the way of other too big to fail corporations. Trust me it will happen, Your grandchildren will ask what a Starbucks was?
