Black Friday is expected to attract more than 100 million shoppers nationwide, some of which are even willing to camp out for days in front of big-brand businesses and get a head start on some of their holiday shopping.

But American Express and local businesses around the country are recognizing Nov. 30 as Small Business Saturday, encouraging the community to support their local economy by doing some of their holiday shopping at small, independent retailers.
Small businesses have long been an integral part of the Santa Clarita Valley, something that the city council has tried to foster by turning Main Street in Old Town Newhall into an arts and entertainment district with “Thursdays at Newhall” events and this year’s “Light Up Main Street” block party.
Steve Tannehill, executive director of the Small Business Development Center at College of the Canyons said that Small Business Saturday is an event they certainly promote.
“We encourage small business every day,” he said. “…I think that anything that promotes small businesses and gets people thinking about the role of small businesses in our community is a good thing.”
Vayu Yoga, a yoga studio on Main St. is one of the small local businesses offering holiday sales.
Weny Hassenpflug, founder and owner of Vayu Yoga said that this year has been her biggest sale ever, because 2013 is the first holiday season that she has a physical studio, instead of operating out of her home.
Vayu Yoga’s “Stock Up and Save” sale started Monday and ends on Dec. 20, offering up to 30 percent off on all training sessions.
Hassenpflug recognizes not only the importance of buying from small businesses, but also of small businesses supporting each other.
“Down here in Old Town Newhall, the merchants are very supportive of one another,” she said.
“We refer one another… We don’t see each other as competitors, but more as neighbors.”
Unlike Vayu Yoga, Beyond Harmony Med Spa on Soledad Canyon Road has been doing holiday specials for 12 years, according to Spokesman Rosemary Murphy.
They are offering $10 off for every $75 spent, to coincide with American Express’ program.
The credit card company is offering a $10 credit to anyone who spends $10 or more with their American Express card at qualifying small businesses on Nov. 30.
Beyond Harmony has signed up to be a part of the program and are ready to match the American Express discount.

Murphy said that supporting small businesses during the holiday season is a win-win for everyone.
“It’s important to everyone in a community to support their local businesses because that money is going right back into their community,” she said.
Hassenpflug also encouraged Santa Clarita locals to buy from the people who know them and care about the community.
“It’s personable,” she said. “You’re not just another number, another money figure walking through the door.”
