Surfaces USA Remains The Only Slab Yard In The SCV

Surfaces USA in Castaic is the only slab yard in the Santa Clarita Valley, and carries hundreds of full slab pieces for customers to choose from rather than small swatches like some competitors, according to Jen Brown, interior designer and owner of Surfaces USA.

“We have a gorgeous showroom to check out,” she said. “You actually get to physically see your full slab piece; you don’t see a little tiny four-by-four swatch. We have beautiful tile samples, we have a lot of the wood porcelain tiles, natural stones.”Santa Clarita Design Center Surfaces USA

Santa Clarita residents browsing the showroom often ask Brown and her experienced staff of interior designers what kinds of countertops, flooring and wall tiles will be popular long into the future when they sell their home, and Brown’s answer is simple:

“If you’re not selling for five years I have no way to tell you what’s going to be popular,” she said, “but I can tell you as long as you have a solid surface, that’s all that’s going to matter.”

Solid surfaces that won’t easily go out of style include granite or quartz countertops, according to Brown, while backsplashes can be thought of more as an accessory that can be easily changed out in the future if the trend loses its popularity.

“The backsplash we can replace pretty easily without damaging the countertops, without a lot of major overhaul,” she said. “That’s something that you can change out over time.”

While some Santa Clarita residents may be tempted to buy the materials from a design center like Surfaces USA and attempt the installation themselves, Brown strongly advises against it.

“You see it all the time– people thought they could start things,” she said. “I did have a client who went almost seven months with plywood countertops because they couldn’t find what they wanted; the husband was adamant he could do it himself. Certain things you can, tile possibly– probably not the best idea –but granite countertops, there’s no way you’re going to do it yourself as a weekend project.”

From demolition to fabrication to installation and everything in between, the experts at Surfaces USA can handle the entire process from start to finish using their own crews. In addition, the design center is staffed with knowledgeable interior designers who can help bring homeowners’ creative visions to life.

“What’s going to take you and I weeks, lots of weekends, lots of nights to do, my guys can come in and do it in a matter of days,” Brown said. “There’s so much that goes into it… There’s certain things that should be left to the professionals, and other do-it-yourself projects that you can take on yourself at home.”
