Canyon High graduate swings and hits at world records in pursuit of gold.
Canyon High graduate and worldwide softball phenomenon Crystl Bustos is one of several local athletes participating in the Beijing Olympics. As a member of the USA Women’s Softball Team, this is Bustos’ third Olympic competition and she’s hoping to bring home her third gold medal.
Bustos, a dynamic – and feared – hitter, plays third base and broke Olympic records in Athens (2004) with five home runs and 10 runs batted in. The team has a record of 24-4 over the last three Olympic games, including an undefeated 9-0 record in 2004. The team broke 16 records in Athens, including eight of their own records and won the gold in 1996, 2000 and 2004.
In this year’s competition, USA’s softball team has trounced Venezuela and Australia in games Tuesday and Wednesday and is set to meet Canada on Thursday, Japan on Friday, Chinese Taipei on Saturday, the Netherlands on Sunday and China on Monday. Playoff games are scheduled Wednesday and the gold medal game is next Thursday. Visit hometownstation.com for the latest news on Santa Clarita athletes in Beijing.
