CalArts Grads Win Oscar For Best Animated Feature

Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, graduates of California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film at the 85th annual Academy Awards.CalArts was well represented in the category, with alums responsible for three of the five films nominated. Andrews’ and Chapman’s picture, “Brave” (Disney/Pixar 2012), beat out the work of fellow alums Tim Burton (“Frankenweenie”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph”).

The non-CalArtian films in the category were “ParaNorman” by Sam Fell and Chris Butler, and “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” by Peter Lord.

Chapman graduated from CalArts in 1987 and Andrews in 1993, each with a bachelor’s degree in film and video.

The other film with a Santa Clarita Valley connection to pick up Oscars Sunday night was “Django Unchained” when director Quentin Tarantino won for Best Original Screenplay and Christoph Waltz won for Best Supporting Actor. Scenes were shot at Melody Ranch in Placerita Canyon.
