California United Bank’s Santa Clarita Valley office will donate $47,000 raised during the bank’s annual golf tournament to the non-profit Carousel Ranch in Saugus, providing a major source of funding this year for the ranch’s therapy programs for special-needs children ages two years and older to adults.
It’s the second year in a row the bank has contributed to Carousel Ranch.
“It really made the difference for us last year,” said Denise Tomey, the ranch’s executive director, “and we are so grateful to them for choosing us again this year.”

“We do a charity golf tournament, this is our fifth annual, and we always designate a charity,” explained Greg Spencer, a VP at California United Bank. “We call it our CUB (the acronym for the bank name) for Kids charity and Carousel Ranch certainly helps children.
“I was introduced to Carousel through a member of their advisory board and when I saw what they did, it was easy to designate them as our charity,” Spencer continued. “I was so impressed, I ended up joining their board of directors. When you’re at the ranch, you see the dedication of the staff and see the changes they make in the kids, it’s just inspirational.”
Carousel Ranch’s staff provides therapy for its patients on horseback, but it’s not about riding lessons. Therapists seek the same goals as in traditional forms of therapy, from learning balance and coordination to speech to modifying behavior, as the patient’s needs require. The staff works with about 90 children of all ages and disabilities each week.
About 80 percent of Carousel’s clients are from the Santa Clarita Valley, and the rest come from surrounding areas, including the San Fernando and Antelope valleys, Pasadena and Los Angeles.
Representatives from California United Bank will formally present a check to Tomey and the Carousel Ranch staff at the ranch on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 2:15 p.m.
Carousel Ranch is located at 34289 Rocking Horse Road, Santa Clarita 91390-3482. For more information about the ranch, its therapy programs and volunteer opportunities, visit www.carouselranch.org or call (661) 268-8010.
