Caltrans Begins New $100.1 Million I-5 Renovations

The California Department of Transportation, known as Caltrans will be closing lanes, ramps and connectors on the California State Freeway I-5 between Vista Del Lago Road and the Kern County line.

The closures are part of a $100.1 million pavement improvement project.

All detours will have signs posted.

No unusual levels of dust, noise, or vibrations are expected.

The project will replace slabs in both directions of I-5 from Vista Del Lago Road to the Kern County line. 15.4 miles in distance.

A variety of work will be done on the road, including: replacing two outside lanes and the outside barrier, and replacing damaged slabs of road.

The project will also update drainage features, replace the old wooden guardrails will metal, add post mileage signs, widen the inside shoulder and repave ramps.  

“The project will help to extend the life of the pavement, reduces maintenance costs and closures, and will give motorists a more comfortable ride,” said Kelly Markham, Caltran’s public information officer.

In order to minimize inconvenience, most of the road work will be done at night. Although some will be done during the day.

Closure Dates: Sunday, June 9, through Saturday, June 15

Northbound I-5

Up two lanes of northbound I-5 between Vista Del Lago Road and the Kern County Line

TIME: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.

One lane of northbound I-5 between Vista Del Lago Rd. and the Kern County line may be closed at any time.

Smokey Bear Road on-ramp and off-ramp

TIME: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Southbound I-5

Up to two lanes of southbound I-5 between the Kern County Line and Vista Del Lago Road

TIME: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.

One lane of southbound I-5 between the Kern County line and Vista Del Lago Road may be closed at any time.

Gorman Road off-ramp

TIME: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Smokey Bear Road on-ramp and off-ramp

TIME: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
