Caltrans Officials Announce Truck Route Closures Next Week

Commuters heading to and from the Santa Clarita Valley shouldn’t see delays Monday through Thursday next week, even though Caltrans officials are closing the truck routes through the Newhall Pass during rush hour, an official said Friday.

While the closures generally take place so that they do not interfere with already impacted commute times, the nature and urgency of work caused a change in the usual schedule.

“The reason is that is that it’s an emergency closure, so the contractor needed a bigger window to work in,” said Kelly Markham, spokeswoman for Caltrans.

The work will be a repaving of the truck lanes for the southbound portion of Interstate 5 and Highway 14 beginning Monday at 9 a.m. and continuing until 4 a.m.

The closures will take place during those hours each day until Thursday.

“It’s not going to affect most people because it’s the truck route, so your normal motorist is not going to be using the truck route,” Markham said.

While the road closures are only applicable to the truck routes, the work will push a higher volume of the slower-moving big rigs on to the regular lanes.
