Local residents who have survived cancer are invited to attend the fourth annual Relay For Life Survivor Breakfast, scheduled for 8 a.m. Thursday, March 25, at the TPC Golf Clubhouse in Westridge Valencia. Cancer survivors are invited to attend free of charge and can bring one guest for $10.
Keynote speaker will be Judith Harris, whose “laughter therapy” concept will have guests laughing at even the most difficult things in life. David Koppenhaver, a male breast cancer survivor, also will address breakfast guests. Koppenhaver walks on the Doin’ It for Davis Relay team, which honors his son, Davis, who also has battled cancer and won.
The breakfast is a prelude to the American Cancer Society’s SCV Relay For Life, scheduled for May 22-23 at Central Park. The Relay planning committee hopes to have as many as 600 cancer survivors at Relay to participate in the opening Survivor’s Lap, the evening Luminaria Ceremony, and special events throughout the day.
A special Survivors Village will be set up at Relay to give cancer survivors a place to rest, network with other survivors, and pick up useful information on ACS services for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers.
Relay is a 24-hour walking event with a goal of raising more than $600,000 locally for the fight against cancer. The Survivor’s Breakfast and opening lap offer a way for cancer survivors to participate even though they may not be able to participate in the full 24-hour event.
Survivors interested in the breakfast can get further information at survivors@scvrelay.org or by calling (661) 298-0886, option 3. Relay participants can register teams or join existing teams at the local Relay Web site at http://www.scvrelay.org, calling 259-0886, option 3, or contacting ACS staff member Danielle Anziano at Danielle.Anziano@cancer.org.
Cancer information is available 24 hours a day at www.cancer.org or by calling (800) ACS-2345.
