Canyon Country Boy Scout Provides Respectful Flag Disposal For Community

“As Americans, we wonder what to do with a flag that has become tattered/worn and is no longer fit to serve as a proud symbol of our country,” said Canyon High School junior David Sandridge. In an effort to help local residents dispose of their flags respectfully, Sandridge, member of local Boy Scout troop #582, will be conducting a flag retirement ceremony on Saturday, March 9 as part of his Eagle Scout Project.

“It’s not a service that we do in our city often,” Sandridge said. “So I thought it would be a great way to give back to our veterans and our community.”

Sandridge will be collecting worn-out flags from all the schools in the William S. Hart High School District, in addition to opening the collection to the community. Any flag that you would like to donate to be retired by burning, must be turned in by March 1. There are several drop-off options:

  • 19513 Drycliff Street in Canyon Country
  • Hart District Office on Centre Pointe Parkway
  • Any high school in the Hart District

If you do not have the time to drop off your flag, leave it in a bag on your porch and contact Sandridge by phone at 607-7740 or 310-3353 or by email at dave.sandridge@yahoo.com.

The retirement ceremony will take place at 5 p.m., Saturday, March 9 at the Veterans of Foreign War Center on Sierra Highway. Though the event is free and open to the public, Sandridge asks that children not attend, to maintain a high level of respect for the veterans and ceremony.
