brent_zubek_lapdA former Canyon Country resident and murder suspect, wounded by police during an early morning shootout in Encino Monday, was charged today with multiple counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer and other charges.

Zubek is scheduled to be arraigned after 1:30 p.m. at San Fernando Superior Court, Department S. Deputy District Attorney Michael Blake with the Crimes Against Peace Officers Section will ask that he be held without bail.

Zubek, convicted in 1993 on federal bank robbery charges, was charged with six counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of carrying a loaded and stolen firearm. The complaint alleges he personally discharged a firearm.

Zubek eluded police for several hours Sunday night and early Monday after he fired on officers who had him under surveillance. He was arrested around 4:30 a.m. on the roof of a building in the 4600 block of Libbit Avenue just off Ventura Boulevard. Zubek was shot in the hip by officers after he pulled a gun and pointed it at them. No officers were injured.

Zubek is a suspect in a double homicide after police found the decomposing bodies of a man and a woman on Aug. 12 in the 20400 block of Lassen Street. Police believe the slayings occurred about five to six weeks before the bodies were discovered near the home where Zubek and the two victims once lived.

Zubek faces multiple life terms in prison if convicted of all charges filed today.
