An infant girl is in stable condition, but under evaluation at a Los Angeles hospital she was airlifted to, after she fell down a flight of stairs in Canyon Country, fire officials said Thursday.

Fire Department officials responded to the call to respond to the injured child on the 2700 block of Crossglade, near Soledad Canyon Road, at 8:07 a.m., said fire Capt. Edward Edmonds of Fire Station 107.

“A 2-and-a-half-year-old girl fell down a very steep set of carpeted stairs in her condo, and landed on the tile below,” Edwards said. “She landed on her face.”

Edwards said the child fell down 12 stairs, and estimated the distance at about 12 feet, noting the situation mandated the airlift.

“Our protocol is under a certain age, if the fall is three times height of the child or at least 10 feet, then she qualifies as trauma criteria,” Edwards said, “which means she has to go to a specialty center.”

The child was airlifted from nearby Sierra Vista Junior High School to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

“She was in stable condition, but there were signs that worried me,” Edwards said, noting the child seemed lethargic, but it was too early to tell if that was a sign of a serious wound or just a tired infant.
