Canyon High Teacher Dennis Lynch Honored

42 Years of teaching including 33 years at Canyon.

Canyon High School history teacher Dennis Lynch was honored Sunday for his 42 years of teaching.

That includes 33 years at Canyon. Receiving his undergraduate degree from UCSB and Masters from Azusa Pacific, he taught in California and abroad before coming to Canyon in 1973. He established the District's first US History AP Class at Canyon in 1983, when every student passed!  The national average is 55%, but 96 % of all his students have passed the test!  Three from his first class attended Sunday, one from Maryland!

As Canyon's Academic Advisor since 1983, Dennis established the district-wide Brainstormer's competition and, starting in 1987, directed Canyon's Academic Decathlon team, leading Canyon to great success and 130 medals!

In 2001 Lynch was named Los Angeles County Teacher of Year, one of 12 chosen from a pool of 61 by colleagues across the county.

Testimonies from students, one traveling from Canada, demonstrated the impact that his demanding standards and love for students made, with more than 25 claiming he inspired them to become teachers. Dennis and his wife of 43 years, Linda, have two children, son Casey, and daughter, Kelly.  Their retirement plans are to visit former students, travel, and spend lots of time with their three grandchildren, Marco, Madison, and Ryan!
