The Canyon softball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning in its 5-3 win over Valencia. Both runs scored after two Canyon batters were hit by pitches with the bases loaded.
Hayley Bottino was hit on the elbow, a call that was challenged by Valencia coach Donna Lee. The umpires conferred and awarded Bottino first base, forcing in Brittany Williams with the go-ahead run.
McKenna Smith followed at the plate and was hit on the foot by a pitch. That scored Ziese to give Canyon a two-run lead.
Bottino, Canyon’s freshman pitcher, tossed a complete game and held a dangerous Valencia line-up in check. She sent Valencia down in order in the bottom of the seventh, getting the final out of the game on a ground ball to the shortstop.
After the game, Williams talked about beating Valencia and preparing for another tough test next week when Canyon plays Hart. Bottino talked about the seventh inning rally.
Valencia’s Madison Shippman was 2-for-3, with a home run, a double and two RBIs.
