Career Day Draws Huge Student Turnout

“Discovering Careers” event smashes inaugural expectation.

ImageSaturday at College of the Canyons, Ron Rudzinski rushed to hang balloons and signs guiding potential attendees to his inaugural Discovering Careers Day event. No one, not even Ron, knew what to expect as far as turnout, although they were prepared for anything, be it five or five thousand.

Ron works for the Hart District and was in charge of organizing the event, which started in concept 3 years ago. “The Hart District Career Advisors were bouncing around an idea to have a valley-wide career fair to focus the energy,” Rudzinski recalls. Each High School and some Jr. Highs have their own fairs and the business community often becomes overextended.

Next, Rudzinski says the idea morphed into something entirely new; “One of the things that evolved was to have a hands-on approach, sort of like an Epcot Center experience.” Rather then asking businesses to hand out brochures, they were allowed to bring the tools of their trade to the event.

The National Guard had a gigantic camouflage vehicle the kids could sit in, hair styling students provided doll heads to practice on, and John Murray Plumbing had students welding and cutting pipe.

Overall, Rudzinski estimates that between 1,000 and 1,500 students came to the Saturday morning event, and roughly 1,000 parents. 40 businesses were showcasing their career fields and answering questions from students.

This wasn’t a job fair, it was a career fair. The sole purpose was to give students a glimpse into the wide array of professional careers.

With such a big splash in their first year’s run, Rudzinski is optimistic about next year; “I think we’ll be bigger and better next year!”

The event was put together by the SCV School and Business Alliance, COC and the Hart District.
