The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center will hold its Annual Caregiver Resource Day on Saturday May 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will provide education, support and resources to those caring for loved ones with chronic conditions related to aging, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Keynote speakers are: Helena Chang Chui, M.D., Director, USC Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, who will speak about the latest research in aging and dementia, Rachelle Dardeau, MS, MSW, Executive Director, SCV Senior Center, who will speak about coping with the stresses of being a family caregiver; and Elder Law Attorney Jane M. McNamara who will provide insight into preserving assets and independence.

“Care-giving is one of the most demanding and responsibility-laden roles that any human being can ever assume for another, and we strongly encourage caregivers to attend this valuable event,” stated SuzAnn Nelsen, SCV Senior Center Director of Supportive Services.

The physical and psychological stressors associated with care-giving can actually place caregivers at heightened risk for neglecting their own needs, developing illnesses, and for some, even die before the persons they give care to pass on,  Nelsen explained.

“Caregiver Resource Day offers caregivers a day devoted to helping them obtain essential information, learn to take better care of their own health and needs, and realize that they are not alone. There are many of us here to help,” the director said.

The SCV Senior Center’s Supportive Services department, Home-Delivered Meals program and Adult (Respite) Day Care are among the many caregiver-supportive services available through the center, Nelsen added, noting that information on these programs will be available during Caregiver Resource Day along with the availability of numerous care-giving-related vendors.

Registration is $5 per person: includes all sessions, resource materials, access to vendors, and continental breakfast. Free drawings also featured throughout the event.
